Ismael Chamu and Peter Estrada, two UC Berkeley students arrested last week on charges of vandalism, were arraigned at the Wiley M. Manuel Courthouse Monday afternoon on charges of alleged felony vandalism more than $400 and misdemeanor possession of tools to commit vandalism.

Berkeley Police Department arrested Ismael Chamu on Thursday evening in connection with vandalism that recently appeared on the south side of campus. Chamu is a campus student who alleged BPD officers racially profiled and unlawfully detained him last June.

On the south side of campus, 30 instances of vandalism — including slashed vehicle tires and spray-painted messages — were reported to the Berkeley Police Department June 28, according to a BPD statement released on July 3.

UCPD officers detained one UC Berkeley student and three men not affiliated with the campus on suspicion of vandalizing Sather Gate and other campus locations early Wednesday morning.

The FBI is currently investigating whether an animal rights activist group is responsible for shattering the windows of a Berkeley grocery store.

According to a UCPD crime alert, the vandalism of an interior door of Building 7 at Clark Kerr occurred between 4:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The interior door had scratch marks depicting a swastika and two phallic symbols.
