Excitement and anticipation turned into panic and disappointment Friday as swelling crowds for the Soulja Boy concert in Pauley Ballroom resulted in injury and an early shutdown.

Since the strike ended, UAW 2865 and SRU-UAW members and leaders have disputed union election practices, strike strategy and the impact of their new labor contracts on their thousands of representees.

Catalytic converter thefts are becoming a growing problem in Berkeley, with incidents rising in number throughout the city. These valuable devices, which are located in the exhaust systems of vehicles, contain precious metals like platinum, palladium and rhodium.

UCPD officers were notified of a possible deceased person inside a tent at People's Park on Tuesday at 12:08pm, according to UCPD Sergeant Jacob Westlie. Upon arrival, officers found the body of an unidentified man inside of a tent at the park and confirmed he was dead. 

The December UC Board of Regents Health Services Committee meeting was disrupted within 5 minutes by UAW 2865 and SRU protesters.

Multiple arrests were made following the disruption of the UC Board of Regents meeting by striking academic workers earlier this morning. This week marks the fifth week of the largest academic workers strike in U.S. history.

People’s Park has been a point of controversy within the Berkeley community as campus seeks to build housing on the park, while activists work to preserve it. But currently, the park is “chaos,” according to Nicholas Alexander, a resource coordinator who helps run the kitchen in the park.

UCPD is currently investigating a case of human trafficking and aggravated assault that occurred at a UC Berkeley student residence hall earlier this month, according to the UCPD crime log. 

Yogananda Pittman, who currently serves as the assistant chief of the U.S. Capitol Police, was selected as the new UCPD chief to succeed retiring UCPD Chief Margo Bennett.
