Carol Christ became UC Berkeley’s 11th chancellor Saturday, stepping into the role at a critical juncture in the campus’s history.

It began when students who held a rally commemorating the 30th anniversary of the creation of UC Berkeley’s ethnic studies programs moved in mass to Barrows and locked its front doors with chains.

Today, Christ says that she wouldn’t have addressed the protest in the same way.

Despite protesters briefly halting the third and last day of the UC Board of Regents meeting Thursday, members of the board focused most of their discussion on strategies to maximize revenue for the UC system using the relationship between the university and private enterprises.

Following a similar action taken by the UC Student Association, the UC Berkeley Graduate Assembly voted Thursday to pass a resolution denouncing HR 35, a state Assembly measure aimed at curbing anti-Semitism at the state’s higher education institutions.

On Thursday, friends and family gathered in front of California Hall to pay respects to UC Berkeley staff, students, faculty and emeriti who have died over the past year.

With UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau scheduled to step down at the end of December, the committee created to select his successor is closer to completing the search after narrowing down a pool of nominations this summer.

Cal Athletics has received a $10 million gift from the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Fund, a donation that was officially announced Monday and which will be used to support various programs within the athletics department.
