My baseline of existence as a brown woman isn’t scruffy, it’s silky. Just like my underwear isn’t black. It’s polka dotted. But it still protects me just the same. My activism doesn’t have to come only in choking out my worst experiences. It can also be chucking over them.

If these traditions revolve around stressing about a point here or there, it tells us that being a Bear means living an anxious academic life.

Sustaining our precious planet must come first. Our traditions and customs may unite us with others, but they are presently dividing us from our planet.

Rather than remaining in a single, unyielding form, you have allowed yourself to be reworked and repolished into a new but no less beautiful shape.

Every nation, city and college is laden with its own traditions, and UC Berkeley is no different, full of superstitions and lore.

I won’t be reading a list of resolutions to my relatives. Instead, I’ll tell them the simple truth: My resolution is to change.
