Next year’s executive offices will be filled by independent candidate Victoria Vera as president, current ASUC Senator Melvin Tangonan as executive vice president, current ASUC Senator Nicole Anyanwu as academic affairs vice president, current ASUC Senator Derek Imai as external affairs vice president and independent candidate Joyce Huchin as student advocate.

ASUC president hopeful Stephanie Gutierrez is running for the third time in hopes of putting the ASUC at the forefront of a revolution. Gutierrez is a history and American studies major who is also a national organizer and signatory for BAMN.

ASUC presidential candidate Haazim Amirali suspended his campaign Sunday night. Amirali is a current ASUC senator and ran his campaign with Student Action.

The Daily Californian’s Editorial Board has seldom seen a candidate so apt for the ASUC presidency, but Victoria Vera shined among the rest.

Throughout the ASUC election season, candidates have run their campaigns with personal contributions, donations or without any funding.

ASUC elections have moved completely online, forcing candidates to alter their campaigning strategies and the ASUC Elections Council to find new ways to get the word out about voting. The decision was made in response to campus’s move to remote classes and the shelter-in-place order over the COVID-19 pandemic.

Defend Affirmative Action Party/Fighting for Immigrant Rights and Equality, or DAAP/FIRE, released its slate candidates running for ASUC office Tuesday. DAAP/FIRE is a pro-immigration rights and pro-sanctuary city student coalition.

On Monday, community members picketed in front of San Francisco Immigration Court during the asylum trial of Venezuelan political refugees Annelise Pineda and her daughter Oriana Benavides, a Berkeley High School student.

The ASUC Senate met for its weekly meeting Wednesday night and approved several resolutions and funding for clubs, in addition to hearing from community members looking to make Eshleman Hall a sanctuary for immigrants.

About 200 students attended Wednesday night’s regular ASUC meeting to both voice their support for and condemnation of the Judicial Council’s recent controversial ruling that resulted in the retroactive disqualification of all Student Action candidates in the 2019 ASUC elections.
