I realized my college experience didn’t have to be this epic story to tell as years pass. The choices, the leaps of faith and the small things were enough.

Simply changing the name isn’t enough — we need an entire transformation outside and inside these buildings.

To be a Hispanic-serving institution, or HSI, at least 25% of a not-for-profit institution’s full-time undergraduates must be Hispanic. Today, 21 of the 23 CSU campuses and six of the nine UC campuses with undergraduate education are HSIs. UC Berkeley, currently, is not.

With the advent of college and amid the stomach-dropping realization that I was suddenly “on my own,” I had come to the realization that I needed to make a new community.

Only by openly admitting and reflecting on past mistakes can we move forward to create the campus students have desperately been demanding for years. 

After years of student advocacy, campus officials announced today that Barrows Hall and LeConte Hall at UC Berkeley will be unnamed due to their namesakes' racist histories.
