California’s Public Employment Relations Board issued a complaint to the city of Berkeley on Dec. 1 after reviewing the Berkeley Police Association’s allegations of unfair labor practices.

The University Council-American Federation of Teachers, or UC-AFT, reached an impasse Tuesday with the UC Office of the President, or UCOP, in the latest round of negotiations.

Graduate student researchers rallied in front of the Oakland headquarters of the California Public Employee Relations Board, or PERB, on Monday morning to begin the process of certifying a new student worker union. 

United Automobile Workers, or UAW, Local 2865 union members and UC administrators convened Tuesday for the first Public Employment Relations Board, or PERB, hearing addressing unfair labor practice charges filed against each other.

On May 16, AFSCME Local 3299 went on a systemwide strike to protest the outsourcing of UC jobs to Kindred and Aya Healthcare. 

Members of the UC American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, or AFSCME, Local 3299 labor union gathered at the entrance of Sproul Plaza on Wednesday to strike in response to contract negotiations and UC’s alleged interference with workers’ rights.

On Friday, the UC Office of the President, or UCOP, withdrew its initial objections to UC academic researchers joining the UC postdoctoral researchers union to create Academic Researchers United/UAW Local 5810, or ARU/UAW Local 5810.

Pending official certification by PERB, this will allow academic researchers to begin collective bargaining with UC administration, during which they will reportedly seek improved working conditions, including further career development, increased job security and greater compensation.

More than 3,000 UC academic researchers signed authorization cards in support of forming the union, which were submitted to the Public Employment Relations Board, or PERB, on Friday for certification.

The complaint alleges that the UC withheld employee contact information from unions and distributed mass communications to employees without consulting union members, according to a press release.
