A power outage hit Berkeley on Saturday afternoon, affecting a part of the city near the north side of the UC Berkeley campus, according to PG&E spokesperson J.D. Guidi.

But blaming PG&E for the disruption wildfire season brings to California each year with increasing regularity and strength is, at best, unproductive. Fixing electrical infrastructure is putting a Band-Aid on the much bigger problems of climate change.

Although it’s easy to get frustrated amid hazy situations, know that, at the very least, the campus community is putting its best foot forward.

With all of this newly acquired free time, here are the expectations you might have had for your break and the realities that actually ended up happening.

Despite many emails telling students to avoid campus during the power outage, in true Berkeley fashion, students defied the administration and protested by marching to campus to study — by candlelight.

The outage — which closed the UC Berkeley campus from Oct. 9-11 — may have cost Morris’ laboratory $500,000 and two years of cancer research.
