The Berkeley City Council approved a contract Tuesday with the Housing Consortium of the East Bay, or HCEB, as a contingency plan for interim housing at the Rodeway Inn. 

People’s Park advocates filed a lawsuit against UC Berkeley Monday, seeking $4.5 million in damages for destruction that occurred during campus’s failed attempt to begin construction on the park last August.

Organizer and campus senior Cierra Cardenas said the goal of the event was to fund efforts to provide food, shelter, clothing and harm reduction resources to park residents. She said the group was able to raise more than $2,000.

Michael Delacour, co-founder of People’s Park, died Thursday at the age of 85. 

In an unannounced overnight move, UC Berkeley began the process of fencing off People’s Park for construction of student housing Wednesday morning. 

Make UC a Good Neighbor, People’s Park Historic District Advocacy Group and People’s Park Council filed a petition against UC Berkeley and the City of Berkeley, alleging that both parties failed to hold a public comment session for negotiations about city development plans.

The People’s Park Council held a rally and street fair against UC People’s Park development plans outside Resources for Community Development offices.

The UC Regents' Financial and Capital Strategies Committee recommended approval for a student housing project located on People’s Park during its meeting Wednesday. 

UC Berkeley students have been occupying People’s Park since Monday in hopes of pressuring the campus to stop its plans to build housing on the park.
