Members of the Berkeley Unified School District Board of Education discussed the potential alleviation of health measures and a proposed COVID-19 vaccine mandate for staff at their regular meeting Wednesday. 

With Alameda County now in the red tier of the state’s reopening system, the Berkeley Unified School District, or BUSD, Board of Education members met Wednesday evening to discuss the details of its reopening plans.

Berkeley Unified School District staff has a lot of work ahead to determine how the school district can operate next year — both logistically and financially, as discussed at Wednesday’s board meeting.

Berkeley Unified School District board members convened remotely for a special meeting March 19 and a regular meeting Wednesday to discuss changes taking place amid the COVID-19, or the new coronavirus, pandemic.

At Tuesday night’s Berkeley Unified School District’s, or BUSD’s, meeting, members discussed revising the English Learner, or EL, master plan, California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s new budget proposal and drafting a new Local Control and Accountability Plan, or LCAP.

The Berkeley Unified School District saw a lively turnout at its regular meeting Wednesday, where it discussed Berkeley High School’s Bridge program, Thousand Oaks Elementary School, new board positions, funding and equity.

During the Berkeley Unified School District, or BUSD, board meeting where the board was scheduled to finalize $2 million budget cuts for the 2019-20 school year, hundreds of teachers, classified staff and community members filled the room to support raising staff wages.

While the Board intends to decide upon its final budget at the next meeting on March 13, it tentatively approved changing the funding source of two Berkeley High School counselors, meaning these positioned will potentially be funded for only one additional year.

Assistant Superintendent Pauline Follansbee and Associate Superintendent Pasquale Scuderi joined the board to discuss the cuts and presented the superintendent’s proposed reductions.
