While “The White Lotus” and “Succession” do showcase people of color, they fail to dive deeper into their characters.

In a year in which creative and original stories featuring artists of color received critical praise and connected with viewers, it’s a shame that they are not being recognized alongside films and performances that feature mainly white actors.

I wanted to be a whole slew of firsts, and initially, I found my dream to be a tribute to my tenacity. It was, for a time, what I wanted most out of a career in the industry. And then #OscarsSoWhite happened.

The best picture award is, arguably, meant for the film that most defined the year in which it was released. The best picture winners are memorable not only because they were great films but because they had something to say about the cultural moment during which they were made.

Despite growing up without many multicultural roles to look up to, Beltran still believes theater is an effective medium to push for diversity.

The narrative of this year’s nominations has shifted towards a reflection of the Academy’s gradual emphasis on the necessity of progress in Hollywood.
