Around one year after the death of Mahsa Amini, the Iranian community on campus continues to advocate for their campus community and their home country.

In response to two recent disasters that struck the Maghreb region of North Africa last week — a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Morocco and floods in Libya — students organized a two week long fundraising campaign.

Students at UC Berkeley celebrated Eid al-Fitr, a major Muslim holiday that marks the end of the month of Ramadan, with food and loved ones.

This marks the first time since the coalition’s founding 10 years ago that its endorsed candidate has not been elected, according to a statement from current MEMSSA senator Deena Ali and other members of the coalition. 

The results fpr the 2023 ASUC Senate elections were announced at 6 p.m. Friday during a tabulation ceremony held in Dwinelle Hall. With remarkable turnout, 46 candidates competed for the 20 available senate seats, posing a significant challenge to all contenders. Of these, an overwhelming 32 ran as independents, while 10 ran with ElevateCal and four ran with the Progressives at Cal party. 

Third year nutritional science major Sama Zazai is running for ASUC Senate on platforms including promoting action, advocating for minorities and assembling differences in campus’s marginalized communities. 

UC Berkeley junior transfer student Giancarlo Fernandez was unanimously voted into office by the ASUC Senate as the executive vice president of the ASUC in a meeting Sept. 15.

After watching her community face a “genocidal threat, physical and mental harassment and isolation,” ASUC presidential candidate Khwal Rafique decided she wanted to help alleviate the pain that marginalized communities feel on campus.

Our democracy doesn't differentiate between students in advocacy clubs and those who are not, so it’s important that we all are civically engaged. 

Campus sophomore Aasim Yahya is running for ASUC Senate as the candidate endorsed by the Middle Eastern Muslim Sikh and South Asian Coalition in order to help members of the MEMSSA community find their place on campus.
