Rashi Kesarwani has won the race for Berkeley City Council District 1, defeating Igor Tregub, Margo Schueler and Mary Behm-Steinberg with 55.82 percent of the vote as of press time at 9 p.m.

Rashi Kesarwani and Igor Tregub will enter into an instant run-off for the District 1 seat, after no candidate received the absolute majority with 100 percent of precincts reporting as of press time.

For years, District 1 has been the site of an acute homelessness crisis and poor infrastructure. In four days, Berkeley voters will have the opportunity to elect a new voice to City Council to address these pressing issues. And the candidate best suited for the job is Igor Tregub.

The forum, held at Berkeley City College was organized by League of Women Voters, or LWV, and Berkeley NAACP. LWV president Adena Ishii hosted the forum, and four candidates of District 1 –– Mary Behm-Steinberg, Rashi Kesarwani, Igor Tregub and Margo Schueler.

The Progressive Student Association, or PSA, UC Berkeley’s chapter of Bernie Sanders’ Our Revolution, released its list of endorsements Sept. 12 for the Berkeley City Council November election.

Half of the city council could see a change come November, and there are fourteen people running in total for the four district seats.

One factor for many voters this November is a candidate’s endorsements. Individuals of local and national renown have weighed in on the slew of candidates vying for four Berkeley City Council seats in the Nov. 6 election.

Behm-Steinberg said she is using her experiences, which include working with nongovernmental organizations, to campaign on a “platform for advocacy.”
