Latinx Caucus

After years of advocacy for a permanent space, the Latine community should not have to compromise — especially at a campus that intends to cultivate and serve its diverse community.

The Latinx Caucus met with UC Berkeley administration and Chancellor Carol Christ in a sit-down meeting on Monday to discuss its concerns and demands regarding the welfare and success of the Latine community at Berkeley. 

Social media activism can be beneficial to social campaigns, but can also lead to performative activism on parts of individuals, community members and institutions.

The Latinx Caucus at UC Berkeley submitted a letter to Chancellor Carol Christ on Jan. 12 regarding the needs and issues facing Latine students. The letter emphasized finding a new temporary space for their Latinx Student Resource Center, or LSRC, which has been without a meeting space since Dec. 8, alongside demands for financial aid reevaluation, affordable housing and further retention efforts.

Both the UC system and UC Berkeley announced a record high number of high school students applying for freshman admission for fall 2021.

A proposal to temporarily designate space in the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union for the Latinx Resource Center was voted down by the ASUC Student Union Board of Directors at their Jan. 15 meeting.

Deemed one of campus’s “boldest goals” by Chancellor Carol Christ, the Hispanic-Serving Institution initiative has come to a standstill due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ASUC elections and judicial council officially certified Pedro De Anda Plascencia as the candidate to replace former senator Jenny Jungmin Kim.

Student groups representing marginalized communities discussed the different initiatives and services they offer to students as well as the issues they face during Wednesday night’s weekly ASUC Senate meeting.

ASUC senators passed two resolutions advocating for police review and spoke with Chancellor Carol Christ, who discussed the need for more funding.
