Languages aren’t just different ways of saying words, they are our main method of communication. Language barriers can ruin so much more than I could’ve imagined. I don’t know if I’ll ever have the relationship I once had with my extended family members. 

It’s crazy how one person can have such a big impact on someone, completely changing their life, and then suddenly become a stranger.

Everyone benefits from students being able to learn Cantonese to an advanced level, regardless of their personal interest in Cantonese or even their affiliation to Berkeley. We all should empathize with those cut off from their culture and heritage because of educational inequities.

The AAPI Equity Budget addresses prejudices that affect hiring, training and promotions for all AAPI as a monolithic group, but does not target the individual challenges of subgroups in terms of racial violence and hate crimes.

The language of our family or our culture can help ground us, but what happens when a person doesn’t know the language of their culture?

While the scenery, buildings and food were just like I remembered, everything else changed. In the past 11 years, the city had moved on, and now, it was time for me to make new memories and move on too.

Resting at the nucleus of these stars, I found a sense of communication, an avenue to express what I wanted to without the constraint of phrases and descriptors.
