With the closing of the transfer portal Jan. 18, 2023, and national signing day Feb. 1, The Daily Californian’s sports editors are bringing readers a comprehensive update to the ins and outs (quite literally) of Cal’s 2023 football roster.

When Cal’s starting quarterback Jack Plummer announced his entrance into the transfer portal, it seemed that it was finally Kai Millner’s time to shine. However, Millner made the decision to shed his blue and gold origins not long after his teammate.

Head coach Justin Wilcox suggested in a press conference that the coaching staff will be looking outside of Cal’s current roster to fill the role.

Young’s father, Fredd Young, is “definitely” his idol — because it’s the little things, like family (and snap decisions about whether or not to run the ball) that really make a football player special.

Cal loses their first of four key matchups in their hopes of seeing the postseason this year. The biggest storyline was Jack Plummer being pulled from the game late in the game due to injury. What lies ahead for the Bears now that the quarterback situation is in the air.

Despite only playing for a single quarter, second string quarterback Kai Millner brought hope to a near-empty stadium littered largely with Oregon green.

As eight former Bears felt the accomplishment of childhood dreams, joining NFL rosters, more than 3,000 Cal football fans flocked to Memorial Stadium.

USC let the football slip from its fingers one too many times. The Trojans’ efforts to close the gap on the scoreboard were proven futile by Cal’s defense.

Kai Millner has found ways to relieve the pressure that comes with confronting both adulthood and the possibility that he could be the next face of Cal football.

Conference rivals such as UCLA, USC, Stanford and Oregon talk a big game like Cal does — but unlike the Bears, those teams boast the play to back it up.
