Paul Alivisatos, the campus’s vice chancellor of research and director emeritus of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, has been named the next executive vice chancellor and provost — UC Berkeley’s second-highest-ranking position — effective immediately.

Carol Christ became UC Berkeley’s 11th chancellor Saturday, stepping into the role at a critical juncture in the campus’s history.
