The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, or CDCR, is allegedly discriminating against foreign-born individuals, according to a lawsuit filed in Alameda County on April 27.

Berkeley City Council held a meeting Tuesday night to discuss a contract with Axon, and issues surrounding a report from the Berkeley Police Department.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office has not transferred any people to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody in 2021, according to a spokesperson from the office, but the sheriff is continuing to collaborate with the immigration agency in certain cases.

The city shouldn’t take steps to ensure its marginalized community members are safe only to stumble back just as quickly. 

This hurried $6.5M purchase is in direct opposition to the values this council committed to the people of Berkeley to uphold.

On Sept. 28th, City Council approved a $6.5 million contract with Motorola Solutions despite concerns that the deal violated the Sanctuary Ordinance.

Berkeley City Council voted to enter into a $6.5 million seven-year contract with Motorola Solutions to create an encrypted radio service for the Berkeley Fire and Police Departments, despite public opposition to the city working with a company known to aid U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.

Monetary compensation cannot adequately address the harms suffered by sterilization survivors, but it is a material acknowledgment of a horrific past.

This racialized system allows doctors in ICE facilities to justify unnecessary medical procedures on these populations as punishment for seeking safety.

With the absence of sufficient justification, this policy seems a deliberate effort to impose barriers on international students and threaten the autonomy of universities and their diverse international scholarships.
