City Commissioner and materials scientist Alex Sharenko is running to represent District 2 on the Berkeley City Council, with a platform that prioritizes affordable housing, public safety and environmental sustainability.

According to ASUC Senate agendas, several commission chairs have not been attending ASUC Senate meetings.

The ASUC currently sponsors seven commissions, each with a board and chair, which are tasked with promoting campus resources and being the point of contact for their areas of expertise.

Some former ASUC members have become politicians, including state Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, who served as the academic affairs vice president and a leader in the anti-apartheid movement on campus during her time as a UC Berkeley student.

The first summit for ASUC commission chairs was held Sunday, following a suspension of three commissions for failing to follow protocols that were set last year.

Senators debated the legitimacy of a resolution that was introduced and passed in the same meeting — a process that is illegal.

Just one week after approving a resolution to facilitate student housing projects, Berkeley City Council will once again discuss student housing, specifically for homeless and extremely low-income students.

Berkeley City Council approved three action items at its Tuesday meeting that encourage the development of affordable housing, support community programs in need, and set a goal for more local use of solar powered energy.
