Usually peppered with sprightly synths and rapturous breakdowns, Hippo Campus’ music now enters a new era full of punchy songs with a slight edge.

If listeners are coming into “Lupin” expecting a Hippo Campus album, prepare to be rudely awakened — and then suddenly, pleasantly surprised.

Producing as a solo artist, Luppen was able to share a lot of personal struggle that he felt would be harder to communicate in a group project.

In a few words, this concert was the biggest swoon-fest The Fox Theater has seen in awhile. Hippo Campus could’ve literally stood onstage without moving and hoards of passionate fans would still hoot and holler.

The entire album holds the atmospheric indie-rock vibe, which has become popularized by artists such as Tame Impala. It’s a much different sound than the band’s previous album, which holds a brighter, more classic indie-rock tone.
