Golden Gate Fields

Five horses have died at Golden Gate Fields in the span of two weeks from Sept. 20 to Oct. 4. The racing track, owned by The Stronach Group, has faced backlash from advocacy organizations in the wake of the deaths.

Golden Gate Fields is set to shut down in the fall as calls for animal safety and protection continue to circulate inside and outside of the Bay Area.

Berkeley’s historic Golden Gate Fields horse racetrack will be closing at the end of the 2023 racing season.

Advertised as the world’s largest bouncy house, The Big Bounce is opening in Berkeley this Saturday, setting up shop with several bouncy houses in Golden Gate Fields’ parking lot near the Bay.

“Carolina Mia,” a six-year-old mare, suffered a musculoskeletal injury during a May 21 race and was subsequently euthanized. This marks the eighth death of the year at the Golden Gate Fields racetrack facility located in Berkeley and Albany. 

On Sunday morning at Outside Lands, Maroney took the time to sit down with The Daily Californian and deliver an important message: “Go Bears, rawr.”

At its core, horse racing is legalized trafficking: the purchase, use and abuse of another living being for personal profit.

The Berkeley-based animal rights network Direct Action Everywhere, or DxE, held a demonstration Sunday protesting horse deaths at Golden Gate Fields, or GGF. 

As part of a transition toward neighborhood vaccination settings, residents may now receive their vaccinations at a new mass vaccination site in West Berkeley.
