Gilman Street will be closed through late May as Caltrans begins construction on the Gilman Street interchange at Interstate 80.

Construction meant to improve safety and ease traffic congestion at the Interstate 80/Gilman Street interchange in Northwest Berkeley is slated to begin by the end of the year, according to a fact sheet recently released by the Alameda County Transportation Commission.

Opened in late spring 1985, Berkeley’s Lalime restaurant on Gilman Street bid a sentimental goodbye through a statement to its customers on its website, declaring it would have to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Berkeley community members, hosted by Direct Action Everywhere, marched from the Gilman Street homeless encampment to Berkeley City Hall on Feb. 29 in support of a “Green New City.”

The Alameda County Transportation Commission, or Alameda CTC, entered into a partnership with the city of Berkeley and Caltrans to improve the Gilman Street intersection with Interstate 80, according to Alameda CTC Deputy Executive Director of Planning and Policy Tess Lengyel.
