Without formal guidance from the Cal administration, the Cal men’s soccer team has been left to operate under its own accord.

The Bears upset No. 1 Washington for head coach Kevin Grimes’ school-leading 203rd win. Then they lost to Oregon State, all but ending their playoff hopes. Cal will end its season against Stanford on Thursday.

Cal was uncharacteristically lethargic in the first period of play and ultimately could not recover, losing 2-1 on the road to Portland.

The Bears scored seven goals over the weekend, but were unlucky to leave Southern California with only a win and a tie against San Diego State and UCLA.

A tumultuous weekend saw the Bears beat the Beavers and lose to the Huskies to go 1-2-0 in Pac-12 play.

They say that if you aim for the king, you best not miss. Last Friday, Cal hosted its rival, No. 2 Stanford, and miss they did.

Cal’s high-flying undefeated start to the season crashed back down to earth Sunday as the Bears were treated to a sobering 1-0 loss at the hands of Denver. 

This past weekend, the Cal men’s soccer team was regrettably reminded of this lesson after suffering two losses to Washington and Oregon State, despite exerting significant offensive control in both games.

The Bears began Thursday’s game with a lackadaisical start, as sloppy touches allowed UCLA to pass through the midfield effortlessly and dominate its offensive third.
