Dozens of tents, hammocks strewn up between redwoods, park regulars and student activists currently encompass the landscape of People’s Park. In the midst of this is an ongoing controversy over UC Berkeley’s plan to develop the area, resulting in protests and retaliation.

UC Berkeley students have been occupying People’s Park since Monday in hopes of pressuring the campus to stop its plans to build housing on the park.

The Undergraduate Workers Union shut down Golden Bear Cafe Wednesday afternoon as part of a larger protest demanding that Cal Dining student employees receive back pay for alleged wage theft and an increased wage of $17 to $19 an hour from Cal Dining management.

In the fifth day of an occupation that began Wednesday evening to protest tuition increases, occupiers started to bump up against shrinking numbers and the looming presence of Thanksgiving break, posing new problems and new opportunities for a largely leaderless movement.
