I initially arrived at UC Berkeley sure of myself with goals and knowing what I wanted to do in the future. Now as I navigate my final year here, I am unsure of what I want. In some ways, you could say my experiences have broken me — and there is some truth to that. However, at some point, I realized I needed to let go of my fear of failing.

Failure is the sore thumb that sticks out. When I come across an interesting opportunity, I'm often the biggest obstacle standing in my way.

Failing the HSK made me realize that failure is not the dark pit I imagined it to be — instead, it can be an opportunity of reflection and redirection.

A shout out during convocation for transfers is not enough to mitigate these feelings of exclusion. The UC Berkeley community, with its rigorous academics, can and should undergo a paradigm shift in how it receives transfer students. This starts at an interpersonal level with each of y’all.
