Defend People's Park

2022 proved to be an eventful year for Berkeley’s historic People’s Park. In April, community members gathered to celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the park. In August, during an overnight operation, the University of California fenced off the park for the construction of a student housing site. Within hours, protesters halted construction, and the fight over People’s Park wages on.

We must also recognize those with Ohlone ancestors that populated the land long before all privatized land ownership.

Now is the time to move from the park being a volatile point of controversy to developing a feasible plan of action based on cooperation between the University of California and the people of the city that hosts its flagship campus.

The march comes as UC Berkeley continues its plans to construct student housing at People’s Park and 1921 Walnut St., a currently tenant-occupied building.
