For the first time, students who applied to the College of Letters and Sciences, or L&S, under any major designated as high-demand are guaranteed a spot in their selected major post-admission.

Campus has offered up two new programs for undergraduate students to major in: East Asian humanities and educational sciences.

In light of the COVID-19, or the new coronavirus, pandemic, campus has implemented grading changes for spring 2020, including defaulting all undergraduate courses to the pass/no pass, or P/NP, grading system.

Major caps also encourage an environment where grades are given a disproportionate amount of importance. This comes at the cost of other aspects of education such as teamwork, creativity and exploration.

UC Berkeley professor of sociology and South and Southeast Asian studies Raka Ray was appointed Friday as the next dean of the Division of Social Sciences in the College of Letters and Science.
