The Berkeley City Council passed the first phase of Berkeley Reparations March 22 to address the economic injury made to descendants of slavery in Berkeley.

The Amharic language course offered this spring is especially noteworthy. Except for a brief pilot program in 2006, this is the first semester students are able to take a course in Amharic, one of the languages of Ethiopia, which is spoken by nearly 26 million people worldwide.

Over the next eight years, 113 students from sub-Saharan Africa will be awarded full-ride scholarships to UC Berkeley thanks to a program recently launched by the MasterCard Foundation.
