The UC Student Association, or UCSA, and The Institute for College Access and Success, or TICAS, released a report examining the burden of student debt across the UC system for the year of 2017-18, according to a UCSA press release sent out March 21.

In a press release published Feb. 22, California state Sen. Richard Roth, D-Riverside, introduced SB 461, a bill he authored that works to extend the Cal Grant program so that it can offer financial aid for nine units of summer courses, or two summer terms.

The University of California Student Association, or UCSA, is encouraging the UC Board of Regents to eliminate the Student Advisor position, stated in a letter released on Sunday.

The proposed UC budget will be shown to the California Department of Finance in advance of Gov. Jerry Brown’s January state budget proposal. The UC’s priorities in its budget plan include expanding access to higher education, improving degree attainment, addressing urgent capital needs and keeping the UC affordable.

UC Student Association president Caroline Siegel-Singh raised three primary issues with the UC system during public comment: the lack of transparency about financial aid, the lack of support for basic needs and inadequate financial aid that does not take into account factors including food and housing.

The UC Board of Regents will convene at UCLA Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center from Tuesday through Thursday to discuss advocacy in state government, recent audits, court cases and policies about relations with Native American communities.

Students urged the regents to include students in budgetary efforts at earlier stages and emphasized taking the student experience into account.
