In Berkeley, ditching gas stoves isn’t a hot topic or a forlorn proposal. It’s politically feasible, and it’s already here: the city has banned gas lines in new construction since 2020.

The Berkeley City Council voted to approve the addition of the Fair Workweek Employment Standards ordinance to the Berkeley Municipal Code on Monday.

The California Restaurant Association, or CRA, filed an appeal Aug. 4 against a July district court ruling supporting Berkeley’s ban on natural gas. 

A federal judge for the Northern District of California dismissed the California Restaurant Association’s complaint challenging Berkeley’s natural gas ban. 

More than a year after the California Restaurant Association, or CRA, filed a lawsuit against the city of Berkeley regarding a ban on natural gas pipes, both sides argued their cases during a hearing Tuesday. 

In the context of this lawsuit, the cooperation of those who move into new buildings seems like a small price to pay for the well-being of our planet. 

A group of environmental organizations, including the Sierra Club, wrote a letter Wednesday to the California Restaurant Association, or CRA, asking it to drop its lawsuit against the city of Berkeley’s gas ban ordinance.
