Amassing a 12-6 conference record last season, Southern University has limited its opponents to a mere 19.6% perimeter field goal percentage, further sabotaging Cal’s chances of scoring from beyond the arc.

If the Bears expect to get payback this time around, their performance on Tuesday must be a departure from what they have displayed so far.

More concerning than its record is the manner in which Cal ceded both games. The Bears’ performances this season have displayed multiple cold shooting stretches with seemingly no end and only the most fleeting moments of offensive inspiration.

A Kansas State three-pointer followed by a technical on coach Fox at the 12-minute mark seemed to be the blue and gold’s breaking point.

Cal entered the game with a perfect 33-0 record against UC Davis, last renewing their dominance against the Aggies in 2019. The Bears relinquished their undefeated standing in the matchup, however, losing 65-75.

Between its historic 33-0 winning record against UC Davis and 2-1 home opening record for as long as head coach Mark Fox has been at the helm, it’s not far-fetched to claim that the fans were optimistic ones. Fans that certainly weren’t expecting a 75-65 Cal loss.

Brokenhearted and blue since the day they’ve parted (and likely way before then, as well, considering Cal’s previous record), basketball fans should be thrilled to hear that Monday night will see the official opening of the 2022-23 season.

The new-look Bears confirmed some long-held fears, but equally revealed new reasons for hope ahead of the 2022-23 season.

When the Bears tip off against Chico State Wednesday night, responsibilities will be completely reallocated compared to last season. Cal will need to establish and impose its new identity from the get-go if it hopes to grasp any chance of success this year.

On Thursday, senior forward Andre Kelly declared for the 2022 NBA Draft and entered the transfer portal. He hasn’t, however, ruled out a return to Cal.
