Black History Month

As we remember all that Black communities have fought for, we should also celebrate Black excellence, whether it be in our city, our campus community or our culture.

We are living in the moments that matter most to make change for our future generations, and it starts with us.

From blues to soul and R&B, Jackie Gage and Kevin Goldberg shared the impact of Black musicians in music history throughout the century at their Feb. 7 performance at UC Berkeley's Martin Luther King Jr. Building.

As a result of a false report, Berkeley Drop-In Center director Jorge Colon was detained at gunpoint by Berkeley police in early February.

In 1970, Berkeley was home to more than 27,000 Black residents. Today, less than half remain.

Our Black History Month Issue highlights efforts to achieve change while at the same time noting areas where the city of Berkeley and campus come up short.

The city of Berkeley, UC Berkeley and the Berkeley Unified School District, or BUSD, planned several events in honor of Black History Month.

In January, three UC Berkeley fraternities were officially unrecognized. Now, the ASUC Senate may revoke funding for the International Fraternity Council, or IFC. 

Members of the Berkeley Unified School District Board of Education discussed the potential alleviation of health measures and a proposed COVID-19 vaccine mandate for staff at their regular meeting Wednesday.
