UC Berkeley students continue to struggle with housing insecurity as the COVID-19 pandemic brought on financial strain and limited housing.

On Wednesday, the ASUC Senate held its penultimate meeting of the academic year virtually to discuss ongoing work regarding COVID-19 relief and several bills.

There will be discussions on basic needs measures and updates to the cohort-based tuition policy at the upcoming UC Board of Regents meeting. Because these two items are only up for discussion, there will be no votes or immediate impacts.

The UC Berkeley Basic Needs Center officially opened its doors Monday to students without access to certain resources, aggregating resource-assistance programs into one area for the first time in the campus’ history.

In February 2019, UC Berkeley’s Basic Needs Center will open on the lower level of the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union. The center is the first of its kind on campus.

The campaign coincides with the fifth annual CalFresh Awareness Month, and aims to make healthy options available and accessible to CalFresh recipients.

Campus junior Leonard Irving-Thomas and campus senior Taversia, or Tavi, Borrelli, who were both featured in the film, shared their stories about dealing with homelessness at UC Berkeley in the film and during the panel discussion.

UC Berkeley sophomore Regina Kim announced her independent candidacy Sunday evening for ASUC Senate in the upcoming spring 2018 elections.

Cal Dining’s Bear Market now accepts CalFresh Electronic Benefit Transfer Debit Card, or EBT, which aids food-insecure students.
