A Berkeley man was among nine suspects arrested by BART Police Department throughout the Bay Area on Wednesday, marking an uptick in arrests compared to the days prior, as first reported by Berkeley Patch.

While Black people constitute 12 percent of BART customers according to the most recent data, which is from 2015, the report presented to the BART Police Citizen Review Board at its June 11 meeting found that among all the use-of-force incidents in 2017, 50.9 percent involved Black males and 14.7 percent involved Black females.

An injured man was found with a possible stab wound at the MacArthur BART station late Friday night, according to BART spokesperson Alicia Trost.

Preparations for a protest Tuesday night transformed into a celebration for residents of a South Berkeley homeless encampment at 63rd and Adeline streets, after news reached the camp that their eviction — scheduled for that evening — had been postponed.

BART Police Department posted eviction notices beside the tents of two homeless encampment sites in South Berkeley on Saturday, demanding that encampment residents permanently vacate the area within 72 hours.

The total number of thefts involving electronic devices at BART stations has decreased over the last few months, likely as a result of BART Police Department’s efforts to crack down on crime, said BART spokesperson Chris Filippi.

The Safe Transit policy prevents BART employees — including members of the BART Police Department — from asking about riders’ immigration statuses unless directed by state laws, federal regulations or court orders.

BART police officers, with the assistance of Berkeley Police Department, arrested a juvenile Friday morning on suspicion of serial armed robbery near the North Berkeley BART station following a series of robberies at gunpoint in the station’s parking lot.
