“Lines of Thought: Gestural Abstraction in the BAMPFA Collection,” on display at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive through July 3, set itself up with a noble task: Expand the artistic narrative of abstract expressionism to include artists who aren’t old white men.

Tethered to conspicuously directional source material, the film’s pushback against the defense system and its media corollaries is hermetic and anticipatory of recent events.

Conveniently located just above Memorial Glade, the East Asian Library is relatively accessible for students coming from all directions.

No matter the medium — ink, color, paints or fingerpaints — Tongson’s striking emotionality slams the viewer.
