As the Police Review Commission, or PRC, seeks to fulfill its task as Berkeley’s main police oversight body, it continues to face criticism from the community and grapples with its limited power.

The Police Review Commission examined and recommended changes to the recently released policy on body-worn cameras at its regular meeting Wednesday.

In the past, BPD has had success using footage provided from community members’ security systems to assist with investigations, according to its website. This program is intended to aid officers in more promptly identifying security footage that could potentially help officers follow leads, identify suspects and investigate crime, according to the BPD website.\

Item 32a, submitted and revised by the PRC, recommends that the newly formed police oversight body be given more authority.
