Berkeley’s housing shelters are again confronted with the challenge of providing sanctuary for the unhoused community amidst ongoing capacity restrictions.

Despite the statewide eviction moratorium coming to an end Sept. 30, Berkeley tenants will remain protected by a separate moratorium imposed by the city. 

About 89% of federal funding to prevent evictions has not been distributed to renters in need, according to The New York Times. However, this national trend is not as represented in Berkeley. 

As Alameda County finishes counting ballots, results from the 2020 general elections largely remain consistent with initial tallies.

Out of the 12 propositions on the ballot, three have been approved by voters and five have failed while the rest remain uncertain, as of press time.

Candidates Leah Simon-Weisberg, Andy Kelley, Xavier Johnson, Dominique Walker and Mari Mendonca are leading the race for Berkeley Rent Stabilization Board as of press time, where they will work to regulate rent, provide tenants with protections and maintain affordable housing.

According to data gathered by California Target Book, which gives nonpartisan information on the state’s politics, voters have seen an increase of more than $150 million in spending on advertisements for ballot measures this year compared to 2016.

Proposition 17 would reenfranchise California parolees and give them the chance to reintegrate into society if passed in November.

Andy Kelley, vice chair of the Alameda County Democratic Party and an Alameda County planning commissioner, is running for the Berkeley Rent Stabilization Board this November.
