This year’s Cal team has been defined by its youth, so it should come as no surprise that this will be every player’s first trip to regionals, the lone exception being Brandon McIlwain, who tasted the postseason in 2016 with South Carolina.

Unfortunately for all parties involved, it was Mother Nature taking home the win as inclement weather resulted in the cancellation of the third game.

Cal baseball's Andrew Vaughn has once again been recognized for his slugging prowess, being named one of 25 semifinalists for the 2019 Golden Spikes Award.

By the time freshman Mitchell Scott recorded the final out on the mound, Cal had put up 18 runs and 20 hits against one of the top 15 pitching staffs in the country.

Although the majority of the attention he draws is because of his excellence on the diamond, Andrew’s talent as a baseball player is nowhere near the defining attribute of his being.

Despite a couple hiccups along the way, Cal handled its business and completed a three-game sweep of Utah, moving up to fourth place in the Pac-12.

In their second matchup, Cal put any concerns of another offensively deprived game to rest from the jump, batting around the order en route to six runs on six hits in the first inning alone.

This season, Vaughn has a .344 batting average with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs, all of which are team highs. Vaughn also ranks in the top 25 nationally in on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

Overall, the Bears flexed their capability across the batting order, with their offensive power only growing with each game in the series.
