Cal men’s rowing concluded a successful start to its season this past weekend with a dominant win against UC San Diego. The Bears’ varsity eight and second varsity eight boats finished first and second, respectively.

Cal women’s rowing kicked off its season in victorious fashion last weekend, winning five of six races over two days of competition. Meanwhile, Cal men’s rowing is set for its season opener this weekend against UC San Diego.

Cal is behind in training by its own standards — the blue and gold are just two and a half months into their training due to pandemic-induced restrictions. The Bears were not able to congregate as a full team until recently.

Although COVID-19 derailed traditional recruitment, the women’s rowing team has bolstered its roster through the addition of five recruits, including one from England.

As one of only three teams to advance all four boats to Sunday’s grand finals, the Cal men’s rowing team was one of the premier performers over the weekend.

In both tournaments, the semifinals will take place on Saturday, with the final slated for Sunday.

Moffat led this year’s varsity eight boat to an undefeated season and a first-place finish at the Pac-12 Rowing Championships at Lake Tacoma a week ago.

The women’s varsity eight boat was the only Cal boat to win gold at Lake Natoma, while every other boat medaled in the midst of fierce competition.

A classic rivalry will reignite this Sunday as Cal’s men’s and women’s rowing teams will try to snap Washington’s two-year winning streak at the Pac-12s.

Out of the six races at Redwood Shores, only Cal’s undefeated varsity eight boat and novice eight boat were able to outperform Stanford, with Stanford taking the third varsity eight, second varsity four, varsity four and second varsity eight.
