Religion is a choice for me as a Muslim, and it should be for anyone. It is a spiritual belief and should be respected just as we respect people’s political ideas, identities or sexual orientations.

Just as the Sikh community comes together to serve in different ways, multiple faith organizations have the ability to do the same. Service gives an opportunity for many communities to come together, understand each other and become more unified through small actions.

Without a proper understanding of religion, we will continue to have the kind of insidious hate and horror that we have seen in the tragic violence at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, the intentional car crash injuring a Hindu family and other pedestrians in Sunnyvale, California, and the Chabad of Poway synagogue shooting.

UC Berkeley community members may not have control over acts of violence and hatred on a national scale, but they can foster a peaceful coexistence on this campus.

“Game of Thrones” is the fantasy juggernaut of the 21st century — but more than that, it also leads the pack among fantasy narratives in its portrayal and use of religion.

UC Berkeley discontinued its religious studies program in 2017, making it one of two campuses in the UC system to not have a major in religion. Some campus professors are looking to change that.

With Berkeley being a hub for all groups of people, the city of Berkeley also offers all types of resources to support people of many religions.

PSR was established in 1866 as the first seminary west of the Mississippi River and has a mission to “prepare spiritually rooted leaders for social transformation,” according to PSR President Rev. Dr. David Vásquez-Levy.

Hare Krishna is a Hindu temple in Southside Berkeley that has brought the science of self realization to the community since 1975.

Last semester, a campuswide controversy rooted in the ASUC brought to light a rift between the Christian and LGBTQ+ communities at UC Berkeley.
