Berkeley's Legacy 2018

Gentrification in Berkeley has caused low-income families and people of color to lose their longtime homes and forced some to leave the area because of a lack of affordable housing.

This week, The Daily Californian is focusing on Berkeley’s relationship with its history: how the events of the past continue to reverberate into the present day.Here is its story.

After 77 years of selfless service, Oski has finally confirmed his retirement. Oski will be training his replacement to become the next iconic Golden Bear.

The Nuclear Free Berkeley Act, passed in 1986, prohibited the creation and development of nuclear weapons and reactors within Berkeley’s city limits, in addition to preventing the city from entering into contracts or making investments with any organization affiliated with nuclear weapons production.

How many people would die if even one of these weapons were launched? How many weapons would be launched in a war? How much destruction could that cause? People were justifiably afraid of nuclear weapons. In Berkeley, this led to the creation of the Nuclear Free Berkeley Act of 1986.

The Bay Area is so uniquely special that it can feel like there's no place like it, but if we travel, we might realize that's not quite true.

UC Berkeley has a phenomenal legacy in nuclear engineering research. From the inception of isotope production and separation in the 1930s and '40s to the fights against disease, terrorism and climate change today, UC Berkeley’s leadership role in nuclear engineering has earned it an excellent international reputation we all enjoy.

From raising the minimum wage to divesting from banks with ties to apartheid in South Africa, Berkeley has been ahead of the curve on certain issues.
