At mile 17, somewhere in the mountains of Patagonia, this lone thought — a cross between a self-reprimand and a serious question — becomes a mantra that I mutter under my breath. It’s the worst part of a marathon, this space where the miles left number in the single digits, but you’re not close enough to start counting down the last few miles like you can once you hit the 20-mile mark.

I am not a very outdoorsy person. That’s why, when my boyfriend proposed camping to me not too long ago, I was a tad hesitant. He was a longtime Boy Scout and I've never owned a sleeping bag. But lo and behold, I found myself packing up to spend a night in a tent last week.

My mother would occasionally tell me stories about her country and show me photos of my aunts, uncles and cousins in El Salvador. Although I felt a sense of closeness to the country and my family in it, nothing compared to when I experienced them firsthand during my trip there.
