Given the movement into and around the city of Berkeley, many may be wondering if or how they should get tested.

Just as it has not been enough for businesses and localities to spew words condemning racism, police brutality and the death of George Floyd, it will not be enough for the NFL, especially considering its history of being actively complicit in maintaining “tradition” that hinders movement toward racial justice, or even discussion of it.

The return of sports would mean magnitudes for many people across the country. Yet the risks to people’s health that come with prematurely resuming sports ultimately negate the benefits.

People who knew Allison Stokke’s name and face not because of her accomplishments as a pole vaulter and her expected trajectory as an athlete, but because of her looks. Stokke was objectified. And she’s not alone.

Professional athletes are supporting communities financially, and that is critical, but their other actions ought to match the same intentions.
