The Cal men’s basketball team (8-22, 2-15) lost, 84-53, to Arizona State (20-9, 8-9) in one of its most embarrassing games of an already disastrous season.

In its last attempts to save some dignity in the regular season, Cal will head south to face Arizona State on Thursday before meeting No. 19 Arizona.

Ignoring some trip-ups in the first half, the Cal men’s basketball team was playing smart on offense and tough on defense, a rare sight for a team that has had such an atrocious season. In a heartbreaking ending, the Cougars had the last word and stole the lead, winning 78-76

Despite its shared abysmal conference record, Washington State bested Cal the first time the teams met, 78-53, in a game characterized by poor shooting and an unstructured defense.

Not a single player on the floor hit double figures until late in the second half, an embarrassing statistic for any team.

With any luck, the huge boost in confidence that Cal gained from its last win will be its driving force against Colorado. Entering its final four weeks of conference play, all eyes will be on the Bears to see if they can turn this atrocious season into simply below average.

This weekend, the Cal men’s basketball team (7-13, 1-6) flies down to Southern California for a two-game tour and a chance at redemption.
