Karina Chan never quite intended to be waxing poetic about fashion and sustainability as “Your fashion nerd” on TikTok. In a full circle moment, she sat down with The Daily Californian to have a conversation about the impacts of growing up in a tech-dominated environment, what the fashion media landscape is missing and more.

“I love fantastical things … I love the challenge … Futuristic Afrofuturism to sum it up,” Hill shared. “I think my aesthetic is just finding the beauty in the leftovers and creating a whole new world out of that.”

Co-directed by fashion film maker Frédéric Tcheng and Hardison herself, “Invisible Beauty” magnifies how the once homogenous industry began to accept people of color on runways and editorial.

In an era in which title and expertise have begun to lose meaning due to the rise of self-proclaimed entrepreneurs and influencers, it's no wonder many think of “haute couture” as one of those snobby terms that can be slapped in front of any designer’s label. But in reality, that’s far from the case.

The show embodied evolution, spotlighting how designers transform themselves and others through their visionary creations.

The plethora of tragic disasters in the industry helped Ray realize that she could not simply remain creative in the way she approached clothing design. She also needed to also help those less seen — such as migratory tailors and garment workers — and resolve the problem of waste in the fashion industry.

Based on her thoughtful, dedicated and elaborate costuming in “Eurydice,” it’s abundantly clear that Sittler’s meticulous design process has paid off, taking her one step nearer to successfully closing the curtain on her costume design journey at UC Berkeley.

Before the awards took place, Hollywood’s biggest stars took to the champagne carpet (sorry, red carpet) to show off their outfits from the hottest fashion designers.
