PG&E rates will increase Jan. 1, 2024 following the California Public Utilities Commission’s approval of PG&E’s 2023-26 General Rate Case on Thursday.
Customers who qualify for California Alternate Rates for Energy, or CARE, will see their monthly combined bill increase by an average of 13.1% in 2024, according to a PG&E press release. Non-CARE customers will see an increase of about 12.8%.
The press release notes that the annual average increase over three years will be 3.8% and 3.6% for CARE and non-CARE customers, respectively.
More than 85% of the funds from the proposed increase are intended to reduce risk in gas and electric operations, the press release states. One such measure will be placing 1,230 miles of underground power lines to increase electric reliability, save maintenance costs and reduce wildfire ignition from electrical equipment.
Additional safety and reliability measures include increasing electric capacity, as well as examining and replacing pipelines, according to the press release.
