Berkeley City Councilmember Rigel Robinson has taken a major first step in a possible run for Berkeley mayor in 2024, according to state campaign finance records.

Robinson, a two-time council member and campus alumnus, was first elected to the city council in 2018 representing District 7, and was reelected to the seat in 2022. Mayor Jesse Arreguín, who has announced his run for termed-out state Sen. Nancy Skinner’s seat in the legislature, still has an active recipient committee filed for the mayoral seat with the California Secretary of State.

The formation of a committee is not the same as an intent to run; however, the impending departure of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein has caused a ripple throughout state politics down to the local level as several leaders look to make jumps into new offices and leave vacant spaces in their wake.

Robinson was not immediately available for comment.
