On Wednesday, a 29-year-old man was arrested on Haste Street on suspicion of approaching a 19-year-old UC Berkeley student and grabbing her buttocks.

Berkeley police spokesperson Byron White said the student was approached from behind while walking to an apartment security gate on the 2700 block of Haste Street. White added that the suspect allegedly asked the student if she was entering the apartment, then grabbed her buttocks.

“Fearing that the suspect was going to try and follow her inside, the woman ran down the street and called the police,” White said in an email.

The suspect was standing next to a “red/brown van” parked on the street when officers arrived, White noted, and was detained. Upon investigation, officers arrested the man on suspicion of sexual battery, violation of probation, resisting arrest and failing to register as a sex offender, according to White.

The suspect was previously arrested by BPD in 2018 on suspicion of battery and violating probation, as well as being under a warrant for arrest.
