Berkeley Police Department officers received a call for assistance from California Highway Patrol, or CHP, at 12:50 p.m. Thursday following a car accident that occurred in close proximity to Berkeley Marina.
According to CHP officer Andrew Barclay, another officer within CHP’s Golden Gate Division located an allegedly stolen vehicle on Interstate 80 and entered into pursuit. The vehicle’s occupants — the exact number of whom is currently unknown — then crashed the car before fleeing on foot.
In an effort to locate the alleged suspects, CHP officers called to BPD for assistance and “emergency cover,” according to BPD spokesperson Byron White. White noted that the search also included the use of a helicopter.
As of press time, all outstanding suspects have been taken into custody by CHP. Barclay said officers have apprehended at least two of the suspects but could not provide a final number.
Barclay added that CHP was advised that the crashed vehicle and its occupants were allegedly involved in series of residential burglaries in the city of Pinole. As a result, the Pinole Police Department has been brought into the investigation.
