Berkeley Police Department officers arrested David Denton on Saturday evening after he allegedly trespassed into an apartment building located on the 2700 block of Channing Way.
Responding to reports issued from the apartment, BPD officers arrived at the scene around 5 p.m., according to BPD spokesperson Byron White. Denton, who was described as a 41-year-old man, had allegedly threatened residents and was noted as having “thrown items around” while on the property. White added that Denton had also armed himself with a metal object during the altercation.
As the responding BPD officers recognized the man from previous interactions, officers spent the next hour deescalating the situation by speaking with Denton before taking him into custody, according to White. He added Denton was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, vandalism and violation of probation.
An initial eye witness account provided to The Daily Californian had incorrectly placed the incident at Telegraph Avenue and Dana Street. The altercation actually took place near Channing Way and Piedmont Avenue.
